Identity

Château les Clauzots is located in the commune of Saint-Pierre-de-Mons, in the Gironde. The property has been managed by the Tach family for several generations. Frédéric Tach is the current owner, supported by his sons, Adrien Tach, an agricultural engineer, and Maxime Tach, the estate's winemaker.

History and philosophy

The Tach family settled in the locality of Les Clauzots, where activities initially centred on cattle farming and cereal crops, alongside the first white grape variety plantings. Marceau Tach produced the estate's first wine in 1920, a sweet white wine. In the 1960s and 1970s, Paul Tach expanded winegrowing operations, planting the first red grape varieties and carrying out the estate's first bottling in 1970.

Frédéric and Isabelle Tach took over management of the estate in 1993, having built a modern vinification cellar in 1992, followed by a larger cellar in 2006. The inaugural vintage of the red Cuvée Maxime was crafted in 1995. Maxime Tach completed his first vinification at the property in 2013, and Adrien Tach joined the family business in 2017. In 2018, Château les Clauzots partnered with Hubert de Boüard Consulting. The Tach family has progressively expanded the vineyard, particularly between 2006 and 2020. The estate has embraced a philosophy of precision viticulture, prioritising gentle, environmentally respectful techniques, and holds AREA certification.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château les Clauzots covers an area of 37 hectares. Located on the Left Bank of the Garonne, south of Bordeaux, it sits on one of the highest points of the village of Saint-Pierre-de-Mons. The soils consist of gravels characterised by large Pyrenean pebbles (galets), with clay subsoils. The sandy-clay parcels are particularly well suited to white grape varieties.

The red grape varieties planted are Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%). For white wines, plantings comprise Sauvignon (60%) and Sémillon (40%), with Sauvignon gris present as a minor grape variety. The vines have an average age of approximately 30 years, planted at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare.

Vineyard management practices include controlled yields, green harvesting techniques such as shoot thinning (dédoublage) and de-leafing, cover cropping, and comprehensive soil management via ploughing, tilling, and disc harrowing, supplemented by green manure. The estate also preserves two hectares of permanent grazing pastures planted with fruit trees, enhancing local biodiversity.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers red and white wines under the Graves appellation. Average annual production stands at around 80,000 bottles of red wine and 50,000 bottles of white wine.

Château Les Clauzots Rouge

This red wine is crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Ageing lasts approximately 18 months. The wines generally display a balanced structure and expressive aromatics. The recommended serving temperature is 16 to 17 °C.

Château Les Clauzots Blanc

The white wine is composed predominantly of Sauvignon and Sémillon, occasionally complemented by Sauvignon gris. Ageing lasts 6 months. The wines are typically characterised by their freshness and aromatic expression. In 2007, the white blend comprised 60% Sauvignon.

Cuvée Maxime

Cuvée Maxime is a single-plot selection, produced exclusively in vintages deemed exceptional. The harvest is carried out by hand, and ageing takes place in new oak barrels. This cuvée is designed to express the purest essence of the terroir. The red blend for this cuvée varies: the 2010 vintage, for instance, comprised two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot, while other vintages feature a blend with 40% Merlot. Ageing for the red Cuvée Maxime lasts six months in vat followed by twelve months in barrel. For the white, skin-contact maceration is followed by oak ageing.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification takes place in a modern cellar equipped with pneumatic presses and temperature-controlled vats. Maceration for the red wines lasts between 21 and 28 days. To safeguard aromatic freshness, the estate uses dissolved inert gases such as nitrogen. Meticulous attention is paid to temperature control as well as water and energy consumption. Ageing spans approximately 18 months for red wines and 6 months for white wines.
