Identity

Château Les Mangons is located in the commune of Pineuilh, in Gironde. It is owned by the Comps and Desruets families. Manuela and Antoine Comps, together with Matthias and Thomas Desruets, are the estate's current owners, with Brigitte Comps playing a key role in the transmission of heritage.

History and philosophy

The Comps family settled at Château Les Mangons in 1990. The estate undertook a full conversion of its vineyard to biodynamic practices in 2000, making it one of the pioneers of this viticultural approach in the Bordeaux region. This conversion led to organic farming certification from Ecocert in 2004, followed by Demeter biodynamic certification in 2010. Since 2023, the Comps family has partnered with the Desruets family for the management and development of the estate. The estate buildings, laid out around a traditional square courtyard, date back to the 18th century. The cellar was renovated in 2012.

Appellations

Château Les Mangons produces wines under the Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. This appellation has been integrated into the Côtes de Bordeaux as a complementary geographical denomination since 2016. The vineyard is located on the hillsides above Sainte-Foy-La-Grande.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard spans a productive area of 14 hectares in a single continuous block around the buildings. It is established on silty-clay soils. Surrounding the vines, 18 hectares are dedicated to meadows and woodland, contributing to a preserved environment and the conservation of plant and animal biodiversity. The red grape varieties grown are Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. For white wines, Sauvignon Gris and Sauvignon Blanc are planted. Vineyard management practices include cover cropping between rows, mechanical under-vine cultivation, green manure crops (oats, rye, field beans), and the application of biodynamic preparations such as horn manure and silica, alongside herbal teas (nettle, horsetail, willow). Copper and sulphur treatments are kept to a minimum.

Key cuvées

The estate offers a range of wines crafted from typical regional grape varieties. The Desruets & Comps collection includes cuvées such as Lux Vitae 2020, Eosphoros 2019, and L'Atypique 2021. The musical range includes the Piccolo, Saxo, Chant Secret, and Armance cuvées. Chant Secret is a blend of three traditional Bordeaux grape varieties. The Armance Rouge cuvée is predominantly crafted from Merlot (80%) and completed with Cabernet Franc (20%). The estate also produces a small quantity of dry white wine, primarily made from Sauvignon Gris, under the Armance Blanc cuvée.

Vinification and ageing

The wines are crafted using diverse methods. For the Piccolo cuvée, ageing takes place in concrete and stainless steel vats. The Saxo cuvée is also aged in stainless steel and concrete vats. Chant Secret is aged half in Bordeaux barrels and half in vats on fine lees. Armance Rouge is aged in foudres. For Armance Blanc, ageing is carried out in vats on fine lees for three months. Armance Rosé, made from pure Cabernet Sauvignon free-run juice, is aged in hydro-ceramic toasted barrels following gentle pressing and two fermentations.
