Identity

Château Magondeau is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Saillans, in the Gironde department. Olivier Goujon is its owner and winemaker.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Magondeau is closely tied to the Goujon family. Henri Goujon and his wife owned the property in 1933. The original cellar, whose foundation is attributed to Maître Puiffe de Magondeau, dates back to 1878. In 1964, André Goujon and his wife Dany took over the estate. Olivier Goujon took the helm of the property in 1989.

Château Magondeau is committed to sustainable viticulture (culture raisonnée). The estate holds Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification.

Appellations

The estate produces wines under the Fronsac appellation as well as the Bordeaux appellation.

Château Magondeau is located at 1 Le Port, 33141 Saillans. Prior booking is recommended for visits and tastings at the property. The cellar is open Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Direct cellar-door sales are available.

The estate accommodates camper vans. A holiday cottage (gîte) sleeping up to 10 guests, with four bedrooms and two bathrooms, is also available. The estate also offers other products, such as wine vinegar.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Magondeau spans 16 hectares, entirely within the Fronsac appellation. The vines are located around Saillans on clay-limestone soils across hillsides and plateaux. The average age of the vines is around 40 years. A weather station is installed in the heart of the vineyard to ensure tailored parcel management.

The grape variety plantings are predominantly Merlot, complemented by Cabernet varieties.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers several cuvées. Château Magondeau in the Fronsac appellation is a red wine crafted primarily from Merlot, sourced from vines averaging forty years of age. Vinification includes fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete vats using selected yeasts, followed by ageing in vats.

The “Passion de Magondeau” cuvée, also a red wine, comes from 100% Merlot parcels. Certain vintages of this cuvée have been aged in oak barrels, including new oak.

Another red cuvée, “M de Magondeau”, is predominantly Merlot. It is vinified in vats. The estate also produces a Bordeaux Rosé and a Bordeaux Blanc.

Vinification and ageing

Red winemaking follows traditional methods, with complete destemming and fermentation in epoxy-lined, temperature-controlled concrete vats. Selected yeasts are used. Ageing lasts between 12 and 18 months, carried out in vats or barrels depending on the cuvée. Blending and fining are carried out at the estate.
