Château Labory

Identity

Château Labory, located in the commune of Saillans in the Gironde, is linked to the Trocard family, and more recently to Michel Reybier and his family. Benoît Trocard served as winemaker at the property. Château Cos Labory was ranked a Cinquième Cru Classé in 1855.

History and philosophy

The Trocard family's involvement with the estate dates back to 1628. The Château takes its name from its geographical location on the hill of Cos and from François Labory, owner until 1845. In 2023, the property was acquired by Michel Reybier and his family.

The appellations

Château Labory produces wines under the Fronsac appellation. Château Cos Labory and Le Saint Estèphe de Cos Labory belong to Saint-Estèphe.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Labory covers 35 hectares. It is characterised by a plateau of deep gravel with clay and a limestone bedrock. Clay soils are also noted. The climate benefits from its proximity to the Gironde Estuary and the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, which moderates weather extremes. The average age of the vines is around 35 to 38 years, with a planting density of 5,000 vines/ha and yields of 35 to 40 hl/ha. Grape varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Merlot can account for 80% of the plantings, complemented by 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec. The estate practices conventional viticulture.

Château Labory

This cuvée is a still red wine. It offers a profile focused on fresh fruit and floral notes, with a supple attack and seamless, integrated tannins. It is aged entirely in vats, preserving fruit purity without any oak influence. Crafted to be approachable and straightforward, it can be enjoyed in its youth.

Château Cos Labory

The estate's grand vin, this still red wine is crafted from a blend that includes Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, alongside other grape varieties such as Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Le Saint Estèphe de Cos Labory

This second wine is a still red wine.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification at Château Labory follows traditional methods. For the Château Labory cuvée, ageing takes place exclusively in vats, highlighting the wine's fruity and floral aromas. For other cuvées, ageing is also described as traditional.
