The terroir

The Fronsac appellation is situated on the Right Bank of the Dordogne, in the Libournais. Its vineyard spans hillsides and plateaus dominated by clay-limestone soils, occasionally enriched with Fronsadais molasse and sandstone. This geological makeup fosters both good water retention and adequate drainage, contributing to the complexity of the wines. The local microclimate benefits from the river’s influence, moderating extreme temperatures.

The wines

Fronsac wines are exclusively red. The permitted grape varieties are Merlot, which takes the lead, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot imparts a supple texture and red fruit aromas to the wines, whilst the Cabernets provide structure and ageing potential. Fronsac wines are generally characterised by their balance, elegance, and silky tannins, along with good cellaring potential.

Food pairings

Fronsac red wines pair beautifully with a variety of culinary dishes. Their structure and fruity, sometimes spicy aromas make them an ideal match for grilled or roasted red meats, such as beef or lamb. They can also be served with poultry in rich sauces, slow-cooked casseroles, and mature cheeses. Decanting before serving can further enhance their aromatic qualities.
