Château Mitaud

Identity

Château Mitaud is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Saint-Morillon, in the Gironde department. It is currently managed by Andrew and Xie Yun.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Mitaud dates back to at least the mid-to-late 19th century, when the manor house was built. In 1891, the property was owned by a Mr Courbin. In the 1950s, the Bruno family acquired the estate, which covered 1.5 hectares at the time. Mr Bruno acquired additional plots in 1994, bringing the total area to around 11 hectares at the time of sale. Andrew purchased Château Mitaud in August 2001. Since this acquisition, the estate has undertaken major renovations, including a comprehensive 15-year restoration of the manor house and the refurbishment of outbuildings in 2015 and 2016. The estate's philosophy is rooted in a deep respect for nature. Future projects include building a new cellar and winery, as well as a visitor centre dedicated to wine experiences.

The vineyard (terroir)

The estate covers a total area of 11 hectares. The terroir of Château Mitaud features gravelly soils composed of small white pebbles, sand, and clay. Historically, the vineyard was converted into an asparagus farm after the Second World War and remained uncultivated for roughly fifty years. The estate is committed to organic and biodynamic viticulture, using organic and biodynamic fertilisers. The vineyard is currently undergoing certification for both AB (Agriculture Biologique) and Demeter labels. The red grape varieties grown are Merlot and Cabernet Franc, while the white grape varieties are Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Partial replanting took place in 2016. In 2017, frost affected 25% of the vines, including new plantings. The first harvest is not expected before the 2019 vintage. In addition to winegrowing, truffle oaks (Quercus pubescens and Quercus ilex) were planted in 2017 following the addition of 100 tonnes of chalk to the soil. The estate aims to produce Périgord black truffles (Tuber Melanosporum), with a first harvest anticipated within 5 to 10 years of planting.

Signature cuvées

Château Mitaud plans to produce red and white wines, alongside a potential sweet wine. The red wines are slated to be crafted from Merlot and Cabernet Franc, typical of the Graves region. The white wines will be made from a blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc.

Vinification and ageing

Detailed information regarding winemaking and ageing practices at Château Mitaud is not yet documented. The estate is currently developing its infrastructure, with plans for a future cellar and winery.
