Identity

Château Morillon is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Campugnan, in Gironde. The property is currently managed by Emma Mado, who took over the family reins in 2020. Xavier Grassies serves as the cellar master there.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Morillon dates back to ancient origins, with the site built on the vestiges of a 13th-century feudal castle where Saint-Louis is said to have stayed in 1242. The current Chartreuse was built around 1700. The Mado family, represented by Jean-Marie and Chantal Mado, acquired and restored the estate in the early 2000s, specifically in 2004, before their daughter Emma took over its management in 2020.

The estate's philosophy is centred on organic and responsible viticulture, the preservation of biodiversity, and sharing. Château Morillon is committed to producing accessible, quality wines, free from pesticide residues and made without added yeasts, fostering conviviality.

The appellations

Château Morillon produces wines under the Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur, and Bordeaux appellations. The plots are located in the Blayais, a winegrowing region on Bordeaux's Right Bank, a short distance from the Gironde estuary.

Winemaking and ageing

Harvesting is carried out by machine for the Malbec and Merlot Intégral cuvées. Red wine vinification involves delicate macerations and limited punch-downs for certain cuvées, such as the Malbec. Ageing takes place in barrels for several wines: the Malbec cuvée is aged for 8 months, while the Merlot Intégral cuvée benefits from 12 months of barrel ageing, 40% of which are new.

What is Château Morillon's commitment to sustainable viticulture?
Château Morillon has been certified organic since 2007, following a conversion initiated in 2004. The estate also embarked on a biodynamic conversion process in late 2021, with Demeter certification anticipated for the 2023 vintage. These commitments aim to preserve biodiversity and soil balance.
What type of soil characterises Château Morillon's vineyard?

The soil characteristics influence the expression of the different grape varieties cultivated on the property.
Who are the current owners of Château Morillon and since when?
Château Morillon has been managed by Emma Mado since 2020. She took over the family property that her parents, Jean-Marie and Chantal Mado, had acquired and restored in the early 2000s, specifically in 2004, thus marking a generational handover within the family.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Morillon vineyard extends over nearly 20 hectares, within a property of approximately 35 hectares, including forests and meadows. It is located in the Blayais vineyard region, about 50 kilometres north of Bordeaux, near the Gironde estuary on the Right Bank. The local microclimate is described as generous and sunny, benefiting from oceanic winds that help to disperse clouds and precipitation.

The vineyard's soils are varied, primarily clay-limestone and clay-silt, enriched by ancient alluvium. There are also plots featuring sand and gravel. The vines face south-east and south-west. The grape varieties consist of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Marselan. The age of the vines varies, with plots of Merlot Intégral being between 25 and 30 years old, and younger Malbec vines of 5 years.

Committed to an environmental approach, Château Morillon began its conversion to organic farming in 2004 and obtained its certification in 2007 from Ecocert. Since late 2021, the estate has also been undergoing biodynamic conversion, with Demeter certification anticipated for the 2023 vintage. Cultivation practices include shallow ploughing and harrowing for weeding, as well as meticulous leaf thinning and spraying of Bordeaux mixture (with less than 4 kg of copper per hectare per year) for fungal treatments, promoting soil life.

Flagship cuvées

Château Morillon produces several cuvées, including the CHÂTEAU MORILLON range, the Gamme M, Blason Morillon, the Nouvelle Gamme Malbec and the Nouvelle Gamme Merlot Intégral, as well as Gamme Oiseau and Les Hauts de Balanger. These wines are crafted in a style that prioritises fruit expression, intensity, and power, while being produced without pesticide residues and with indigenous yeasts.

The Merlot Intégral cuvée, made from 25 to 30-year-old vines on clay soils, is renowned for its concentration. The Malbec cuvée, from young 5-year-old vines on clay-limestone soils, offers a different expression of this grape variety.
