Château Moulinet

Identity

Château Moulinet is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Pomerol, in the Gironde. It is currently owned and run by Marie-José and Nathalie Moueix. The technical director is Frédéric Redon, and the estate benefits from the consultancy of Derenoncourt Consultants.

History and philosophy

Château Moulinet is a property whose wine production has been documented for more than two centuries. It is recognised as one of the oldest estates in the region. Armand Moueix is among the property's former owners.

Appellations

Château Moulinet produces wines under the Pomerol appellation. The vineyard is located entirely within this appellation.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Moulinet extends over a single continuous parcel of 18 hectares (or up to 22 hectares according to some sources). It is situated in the heart of the Pomerol appellation, more precisely in its north-western sector, approximately 2 kilometres from the village. The terroir lies on the appellation's middle terrace, with an elevation ranging between 10 and 20 metres. The soils consist of ancient sands, fine gravel and pebbles, with a superficial presence of iron pan (crasse de fer), or clay and gravel. The grape varieties planted are Merlot (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand over a period of six weeks. The estate does not purchase external grapes.

Flagship cuvées

The estate produces two main cuvées. The flagship wine, Château Moulinet, is a red wine crafted from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. This wine is appreciated for its balance, finesse and elegance, offering an ageing potential of 5 to 20 years. The second cuvée is Clos Sainte Anne, a single-varietal wine renowned for its freshness and highly expressive fruit aromas.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Extractions are gentle, combining punch-downs (pigeage) and rack-and-return (délestage). The estate uses carbon dioxide to facilitate extraction. Ageing lasts between 12 and 18 months, combining French oak barrels and stainless steel vats. Cellar equipment includes both stainless steel and wood.
