Identity

Château Enclos Haut-Mazeyres is a winegrowing estate located in Libourne, in the Gironde department. It is owned by Marianne de Pedro, who has also been its manager since 2018. Yoann Gregori oversees management and winemaking duties.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Enclos Haut-Mazeyres is defined by family transmission dating back to 1830, with the estate having been passed down from woman to woman ever since. Prior to Marianne de Pedro, Françoise Souillé de Pedro was the owner until 2018, succeeding Marie Laure Dubois Souillé who managed the estate until 1985. The estate has embraced an environmentally friendly approach, achieving Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification in 2019.

The appellations

The estate produces wines under the Pomerol appellation. It also crafts wines under the Bordeaux appellation.

Practical information

Château Enclos Haut-Mazeyres is located at 51 chemin de béquille, 33500 Libourne. Tours are available by appointment, in French or English, and cater to individuals, groups, and corporate events. They include an overview of the estate's history, a presentation of the vineyard, a visit to the vat room and barrel cellar, as well as a tutored tasting of Pomerol cuvées, including a barrel sample of the vintage currently ageing. A one-hour "Visite Plaisir" includes a tasting of Château Hermitage Mazeyres. The estate also features an on-site boutique. Opening hours are from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 13:30 to 15:00. The estate is accessible to people with reduced mobility and has a picnic area. Payments by credit/debit card and cash are accepted. The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Enclos Haut-Mazeyres vineyard covers over 9 hectares, precisely 9.15 hectares, in a single contiguous plot around the estate buildings. The soils consist of gravel, clay and crasses de fer (iron-rich sandstone). The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The average vine age ranges from 40 to 60 years, with some parcels reaching 70 years. Soil management is carried out mechanically, and harvesting is performed by hand, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness. The estate pays special attention to biodiversity, as reflected by the presence of 60 trees, including century-old specimens, across the property.

Flagship cuvées

Château Enclos Haut-Mazeyres produces several red wine cuvées. Château Enclos Haut Mazeyres is 100% Merlot, sourced from 40- to 50-year-old vines. Château Hermitage Mazeyres is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, made from younger vines (10 to 30 years old) located on the lower part of the property. The cuvée L'EHM brings together Merlot (55%) and Malbec (45%). Finally, L'Héritage 1830 is a 100% Merlot wine crafted from old vines, some of which are 70 years old.

Vinification and ageing

Winemaking practices vary according to the cuvée. For Château Enclos Haut Mazeyres, vinification takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats, and malolactic fermentations are conducted in barrels. Ageing then takes place in Allier oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, with 70% in 300-litre barrels and 30% in 400-litre barrels. Château Hermitage Mazeyres is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with malolactic fermentation taking place in vats. A portion of this wine is then aged in Allier oak barrels for 18 to 24 months. The cuvée L'EHM is entirely vinified and aged in barrel, as is L'Héritage 1830.
