Château Mouton Rothschild, a Premier Grand Cru Classé 1855, is located in the commune of Pauillac. The estate is owned by Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild. Technical management is overseen by Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy.
History and philosophy
Château Mouton Rothschild was acquired by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853, the year it took its current name. In 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild joined the estate. In 1924, he pioneered estate-bottling (mise en bouteille au château) and, that same year, initiated the tradition of commissioning an artist to illustrate the label. This tradition became an annual fixture in 1945, when artist Philippe Jullian commemorated the return of peace. The Great Barrel Hall, measuring 100 metres in length, was inaugurated in 1926. Following Baron Philippe's death in 1988, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild carried on his work until her passing in August 2014. Since 2014, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild has presided over the estate. Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild is notably responsible for the estate's artistic and cultural activities. A new cellar was unveiled in 2013.
Appellations
Château Mouton Rothschild produces wines under the Pauillac appellation. It is recognised as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification, having been elevated to this rank in 1973.
Winemaking and ageing
The wines are aged for 18 months, using 100% new oak barrels.

The vineyard (terroir)
The vineyard of Château Mouton Rothschild spans a total planted area of 91 hectares. The soil consists of deep gravel. The average age of the vines is 50 years. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand.
The red grape varieties are planted as follows: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The planted surface area for red grape varieties covers 82 hectares.
The white grape varieties comprise 50% Sauvignon blanc, 40% Sémillon, 9% Sauvignon gris and 1% Muscadelle. The planted surface area for white grape varieties covers 9 hectares.
Flagship cuvées
The estate's grand vin is Château Mouton Rothschild, the property's iconic red wine. Its label is illustrated every year by a different artist; the artist Gerhard Richter created the artwork for the 2015 vintage, and Chiharu Shiota produced "Universe of Mouton" for the 2021 vintage label.
The estate also produces a second red wine, Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild.
For whites, the cuvée Aile d'Argent was created in 1991.
