Identity

Château d'Armailhac is a winegrowing estate owned by the descendants of Baron Philippe de Rothschild: Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild. Lucie Lauilhé serves as estate director and Cédric Marc as cellar master. Situated in Pauillac, in the Gironde department, the estate was ranked as a Grand Cru Classé in 1855.

History and philosophy

The history of Château d'Armailhac traces back to viticultural activity recorded on the terroir as early as the 14th century. The estate was acquired by the Armailhacq family around 1660. In the mid-18th century, substantial vine replanting took place. In 1855, Armand d’Armailhacq was managing the estate when it was classified as a Grand Cru Classé that same year. Baron Philippe de Rothschild purchased the property in 1933. Over its history, the estate has borne several names, including Clos de Mouton, Château Mouton d'Armailhacq, Mouton Baron Philippe, and Mouton Baronne Philippe. In 1991, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild decided to restore its original name, Château d'Armailhac. The estate implements an environmental approach centred on eco-design throughout the winemaking process.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château d'Armailhac vineyard covers an area of approximately 80 hectares, located just north of Château Mouton Rothschild. The terroir is defined by four gravel knolls, with soils composed of gravel, clay-limestone, and sandy-gravel. The average age of the vines is 40 years. The grape varieties planted comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (52–53%), Merlot (37–38%), Cabernet Franc (8%), and Petit Verdot (2%). Harvesting is carried out by hand.

Signature cuvées

The estate's primary cuvée is D’Armailhac. The wines typically display a deep character with refined tannins and a well-balanced structure. The aromatic profile is defined by notes of ripe, powerful, and spicy cabernets.

Vinification and ageing

Château d'Armailhac wines are aged for 18 months, using 50% new oak barrels.
