History and Philosophy

Château Perron boasts a history dating back to 1642, with the construction of the château in 1645 and the cellar in 1734. The Massonie family acquired the estate in the late 1950s, specifically in 1958. Since 2000, the third generation of the family—Bertrand, Béatrice, and Thibaut Massonie—has been at the helm. The estate has begun its conversion to organic farming and is certified ISO 14001 and HVE3.

The Château Perron vineyard spans 36.17 hectares. The average vine age is 25 years, comprising 63% old vines and 37% young vines. The soils are sandy-gravelly over an iron-pan (oxyde de fer) subsoil. Planting density for young vines ranges from 5,500 to 7,800 vines per hectare. The grape varieties grown are predominantly Merlot (80%), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). Pruning is carried out in simple Guyot, accompanied by green harvesting techniques such as debudding, suckering, and leaf stripping. The estate is situated at the entrance of the village of Lalande, close to its 12th-century church.

Signature Cuvées

The estate's principal cuvée is Château Perron. This red wine is predominantly Merlot, with varying proportions of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon depending on the vintage—reaching up to 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon for the 2001 vintage. Certain vintages, such as 2000, were crafted from 100% Merlot. The ageing potential for this wine is estimated at 15 to 20 years or more. Cuvées under the "Château de Perron" label are also produced in Pacherenc-du-vic-bilh (still white) and Madiran (still red), with Petit Manseng serving as the dominant variety for some white bottlings.

Vinification and Ageing

Harvesting is carried out both by hand—specifically for the youngest and oldest vines—and mechanically for the remainder of the estate, using a Pellenc Optimum harvester equipped with an onboard sorting system. Merlot is harvested first, followed by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Vinification is parcel by parcel, with each plot handled separately. The Merlots are vinified in temperature-controlled concrete vats, while the Cabernets are aged and vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels for some batches and in vats for others. Ageing for Château Perron takes place in truncated wooden vats and oak barrels. For the Château Perron La Fleur cuvée, ageing is carried out in new oak foudres. Two monthly tastings are conducted prior to blending. Bottling takes place in late spring or early autumn, and the wines are then stored in a climate-controlled cellar. The delivery lead time after harvest is two years.
