Identity

Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours is a winegrowing estate managed by Rachel and Guillaume Hubert. The property is located in Cars, in the Gironde department.

History and philosophy

The Hubert family has lived on the estate since 1895 and has owned it since 1890. The vineyard, whose origins date back to the 18th century, is overlooked by a 17th-century crenellated tower. Pioneers in their viticultural approach, the Huberts committed Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours to organic and biodynamic farming. Conversion began in 1997. Since then, synthetic chemical inputs have been excluded from vineyard practices, and the estate is certified by Demeter.

Appellations

Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours produces red and white wines under the Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. A rosé wine is produced under the Vin de France appellation.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours covers an area documented between 55 and 62 hectares. Around 4.5 hectares are dedicated to white grape varieties, with the remainder planted to red varieties. The average age of the vines is 45 years. The soils are clay-limestone. The red grape varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec, alongside experimental parcels of Syrah, Manseng Noir, and Touriga Nacional. For the whites, Sémillon (around 45%), Sauvignon, and Colombard (around 10%) are cultivated. The estate employs a wide range of environmental practices, including the use of copper and sulphur combined with herbal teas, the spraying of cow manure compost and horn silica, the planting of rye cover crops, hedges, copses, and orchards, as well as the creation of ponds, nesting boxes, and beehives. Harvesting is carried out both by hand and by machine.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers a diverse range of wines across different colours. The red wines include the Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours cuvée, the Cuvée Majeure Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux, and the Énergies cuvée, a blend of Merlot and Malbec. In white, the estate crafts Le Blanc Bonhomme, which blends Sémillon, Sauvignon, and Colombard. The rosé is named L'Amour du Risque. In the past, cuvées such as Quintessence de Peybonhomme were also produced.

Vinification and ageing

The wines are crafted using methods that focus on the expression of terroir and respect for the fruit. For ageing, the estate utilises low-toast oak barrels and amphorae. The Énergies cuvée is aged in amphorae, whilst Le Blanc Bonhomme is vinified in barrels and concrete vats.
