Identity

Château Sainte-Barbe is located in the commune of Cars, in the Gironde department. The estate is owned by Vignobles Bayle Carreau, with Brice de Gaye serving as general manager.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Sainte-Barbe dates back to the 15th century. The estate’s Chartreuse was built in 1760. In 1999, Antoine Touton acquired the property. Extensive renovation work was carried out in the vineyard, including soil drainage, replanting vines and establishing cover crops between the rows.

The appellations

The parcels of Château Sainte-Barbe produce wines under the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation, as well as under the Bordeaux appellation.

Practical information

Château Sainte-Barbe is located on Route du Burck. Visits and tastings are available by appointment. The estate offers a range of wine tourism activities, including disc golf, La Table d'Amandine, seminar rooms, a children's treasure hunt and blending workshops. Three gîtes are available: Maison Petit Verdot, Maison Merlot and Maison du Gardien.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Sainte-Barbe vineyard spans 26 to 27 hectares, set within a total estate of 130 hectares that also includes farmland and woods. The average age of the vines is around 30 years. The soils are composed of clay and alluvium. The vineyard is planted predominantly with red grape varieties, comprising Merlot (83%), Cabernet Sauvignon (7%), Petit Verdot (7%) and Cabernet Franc (3%). Harvesting is carried out mechanically.

Signature cuvées

The estate offers several cuvées. Château Sainte-Barbe is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with subtle wood ageing. The Merlot du Château Sainte-Barbe cuvée is crafted from 100% Merlot. Other cuvées are also produced, such as Men&Gus, Blanc de Noir, Le Rosé and Glouglou. The estate also develops creative releases like Les Bulles and Pet Nat, as well as Symbiose, a blend of different vintages. A cuvée combining IPA beer and Merlot is also available. Non-alcoholic products include a Merlot juice and a sparkling grape juice.
