Identity

Château Peyrelongue is situated in the commune of Saint-Émilion. It is owned by EARL Augarde Peyrelongue, managed by Hugues and Christina Augarde.

History and Philosophy

The origin of the estate's name, "Peyrelongue"—meaning "long stone" in Gascon—is tied to a Gallo-Roman standing stone (menhir) located at the heart of the property. Legend has it that the monk Émilion once rested upon this stone. Hugues and Christina Augarde took over the estate in 2015. Since then, they have implemented a sustainable viticulture approach and achieved Level 3 Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification in 2018.

Château Peyrelongue's parcels are situated within the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation as well as the Saint-Émilion appellation.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The Château Peyrelongue vineyard covers a documented surface area of 8.5 to 10.27 hectares. The soils are predominantly sandy, typical of the foot of the slopes, with a subsoil composed of clay and iron pan (crasse ferrique). The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (6 hectares), complemented by Cabernet Franc (1.5 hectares) and Cabernet Sauvignon (1 hectare). Some vines are nearly 60 years old.

Key Cuvées

The estate produces several red cuvées. Château Peyrelongue is one of the main cuvées, crafted predominantly from Merlot. Another cuvée, L’Étoile, saw its inaugural vintage in 2016. The estate also offers Château Peyrelongue Le Flambeau, as well as Château Peyrelongue Le Phare, whose first vintage was 2020. The latter is crafted from old Merlot and young Cabernet Franc vines. A cuvée called La Pierre Longue has also been produced under the Bordeaux Rouge appellation since 2019. In the past, the estate also produced the Clos des Romains cuvées.

Vinification and Ageing

Harvesting is mechanical, followed by manual sorting. The Château Peyrelongue cuvée is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. The L’Étoile cuvée undergoes 20 months of ageing in new oak barrels. Château Peyrelongue Le Flambeau is aged in vats. As for Château Peyrelongue Le Phare, it is aged in 4-year-old barrels for 8 months.
