Identity

Château Prieuré Marquet is situated in the commune of Saint-Martin-du-Bois. The estate is currently owned by Bernard Canonne, with Luc Barusseau serving as oenologist and estate manager.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Prieuré Marquet dates back to the 15th century with the construction of its chartreuse manor by the Sieur de Lagarde de Sorlus. The estate was then known as Marquette, which subsequently became Marquet. The name Prieuré refers to the presence of ecclesiastical residents during that era.

In 1795, following the French Revolution, the property—which spanned around 100 hectares—was sold as a Bien National to Jean-Baptiste Alezay. At the time, the estate produced white wine. The chartreuse underwent restoration in the 18th century.

In 1969, the Despujol family acquired the estate, with François and Monique Despujol taking ownership in 1972. Frédéric Despujol spearheaded the revival of winegrowing activities. Wine production resumed in 2002 following a partnership among the owners at the time. The estate was sold by the Despujol family in 2014.

The estate employs sustainable viticulture practices across its vineyard management.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Prieuré Marquet vineyard extends across an area of 15 hectares. It is predominantly composed of clay-dominant soils, notably smectite clays. The vineyard benefits from a full south-facing exposure on its hillsides.

The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot. Certain parcels include Cabernet Franc, a variety that formed the majority of specific cuvées in the past. The vines are planted in the commune of Saint-Martin-du-Bois and its surrounding area.

Flagship cuvées

Château Prieuré Marquet produces still red wines. The wines are crafted through vinification designed to express the qualities of both the terroir and the grape varieties. Ageing further enhances this approach, contributing to the complexity and balance of the wines.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification at Château Prieuré Marquet takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and foudres, enabling precise control over fermentation. Ageing is carried out in oak barrels and foudres for a period of 15 to 18 months.
