Identity

Château Rauzan-Ségla is a winegrowing estate located in Margaux. It was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855. The property has been owned by the Wertheimer family (Groupe Chanel) since 1994. Nicolas Audebert serves as Managing Director, while Didier Larue is the Cellar Master.

History and Philosophy

Château Rauzan was founded in 1661 by Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan. In 1816, the estate was renamed Château Rauzan-Ségla by Catherine de Rauzan, Baronne de Ségla. It was distinguished as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. Since 1994, the Wertheimer family, through Groupe Chanel, has owned the property. The estate holds organic farming certification (AB / EU Organic Leaf).

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The vineyard spans a planted area of 71 hectares, facing the traditional stilt-cabin fishing nets near the Gironde estuary in Margaux. The vines have an average age of 35 years. The soils consist of clay-gravel from Terrace 4, forming a mosaic of fine, deep gravel alongside clay-limestone. These Médoc terrace soils are the product of millennia of geological stratification—combining marine, lagoonal, lacustrine, and deltaic deposits composed of gravel and clay layers. A plot named Boston, acquired in 2010, is characterised by fine, exceptionally deep gravel combining large limestone pebbles and clays, reaching depths of up to 8 to 9 metres. Historically used as pasture, this parcel had never been treated with chemical inputs before being replanted. The grape varieties planted across the estate are: 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Harvesting is carried out by hand.

Flagship Cuvées

Château Rauzan-Ségla is the estate's grand vin. Starting with the 2020 vintage, fruit from the Boston plot has been incorporated into its blend. The estate's second wine is Ségla.

Vinification and Ageing

Ageing lasts for 18 months in oak barrels, with 50% new wood.
