Château Renard is a family-run winegrowing estate in the Fronsac AOC, managed by Laurence Chassagnoux. Certified HVE 3 and in conversion to organic farming, it cultivates 7 hectares of clay-limestone vines, predominantly planted with Merlot. The estate offers visits and wine tastings.

Identity

Château Renard is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of La Rivière, in the Gironde. It is owned by the Chassagnoux family, with Laurence Chassagnoux at the helm since 2020, succeeding Xavier Chassagnoux.

History and Philosophy

The Chassagnoux family settled in the Libournais in 1955 before acquiring Château Renard in 1978. The estate was founded that same year, and the family moved to La Rivière in 1978, then to Fronsac in 1979.

Château Renard is dedicated to environmentally friendly viticulture. It holds HVE 3 certification and is currently in conversion to organic farming.

Appellations

The wines produced by Château Renard are crafted under the Fronsac Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée.

Winemaking and Ageing

Ageing for Château Renard Mondésir takes place in new oak barrels, one- and two-wine barrels, as well as in vats. The second wine, Château Renard, sees no oak ageing.

Château Renard is located at Lieu-dit Renard, 33126 La Rivière.

Tastings are offered at the property and cellar-door sales are available. Visits are by appointment, and the estate can accommodate groups of up to 30 people. English is spoken at the estate.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

Château Renard’s vineyard extends across 7 hectares on hillside slopes. The soils are clay-limestone and sandy-limestone, locally known as “sable de renard”. The average age of the vines is 20 years.

The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (90%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (10%). Viticultural practices include green harvesting.

Key Cuvées

The estate produces several still red wines. The flagship cuvée is Château Renard Mondésir, predominantly made from Merlot. Another cuvée, Château Renard Argile Fauve, sometimes regarded as a second wine, is composed mostly of Merlot with a portion of Cabernet Franc. The estate has also produced Xavier Chassagnoux Rosé Rusé, a rosé blended from Merlot and Cabernet Franc, as well as wines under the Château Virecourt label.
