Château Saint-Georges

Identity

Château Saint-Georges is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Montagne, within the Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion appellation. M. Desbois is the owner, and Jean-Philippe Janoueix is the estate's winemaker.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Saint-Georges was marked by a major transformation in 1773, when the architect Victor Louis redesigned the building in the Louis XVI style. The Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion appellation, to which the estate belongs, was officially recognised in 1936.

The appellations

Château Saint-Georges produces wines under the Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion appellation. Covering an area of around 200 hectares, this appellation brings together 24 winegrowers. The permitted grape varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Saint-Georges vineyard covers 45 hectares. The grape varieties comprise Merlot (80%), Cabernet Franc (10%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). The vines have an average age of 35 years. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, and the parcels benefit from a south to south-westerly exposure.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers red wines. The grand vin of Château Saint-Georges is crafted from a blend predominantly made of Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines are best served between 16°C and 18°C.

Rosé

The estate also produces a rosé cuvée called Puy Saint-Georges.

Vinification and ageing

The wines of Château Saint-Georges are aged in oak barrels. Annual production is approximately 330,000 bottles.
