The Vineyard (Terroir)
The vineyard of Château Tronquoy Lalande covers 30 hectares. It is characterised by a terroir of deep gravel mixed with blocks of clay. Formed virtually in a single continuous plot, this terroir benefits from a well-ventilated location. The grape varieties grown include Merlot (51%), Cabernet Sauvignon (41%), Petit Verdot (6%), and Cabernet Franc (2%). The estate is committed to environmentally friendly practices, notably avoiding all chemical weedkillers. Approximately 45% of the vineyard is farmed organically. A 1.8-hectare parcel is dedicated to white wine production on a more humid terroir, while a gently sloping marly plot is dedicated to Petit Verdot.
Flagship Cuvées
The estate produces Château Tronquoy Lalande, a red wine, alongside a white wine. Château Tronquoy Lalande red is crafted from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. It is aged in French oak barrels for one year, with a deliberate emphasis on subtle oak integration. The juice is handled at low temperatures. The white wine, first planted in 2009 with an inaugural vintage in 2011, is made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris. Harvesting for the white is carried out by hand in crates, using successive selective pickings on the vine. Vinification takes place in barrels, followed by ageing on the lees for 6 to 9 months. The estate's second wine is called Tronquoy de Saint-Anne.
Vinification and Ageing
Winemaking techniques at Château Tronquoy Lalande include low-temperature juice processing. Ageing for the red wine takes place over one year in French oak barrels, guided by an approach that keeps the wood influence understated. For the white wine, vinification takes place in oak barrels, followed by 6 to 9 months of ageing on the lees. Optical grape sorting was introduced in 2018.
