Château Vermont

Identity

Château Vermont is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Targon, in Gironde. It is currently owned by Élisabeth and David Labat, who represent the fourth generation of winemakers at the helm of the property. David Labat also serves as President of the Syndicat de l’Entre-deux-Mers.

History and philosophy

Château Vermont was first recorded in 1874, the year it was classified as a 1er Cru de l'Entre-deux-Mers in the Guide Féret. The property has belonged to the same family since the 1880s. The château itself was built in the 19th century. The Labat family, the current owners, acquired the estate in 1986 and took over its management in 2010.

The estate is committed to sustainable viticulture and has achieved Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification. The vineyard is managed entirely without herbicides.

Appellations

Château Vermont produces wines under the Entre-deux-Mers appellation. Historically, the estate is renowned for its white wines, with production dating back nearly a century. More recently, starting with the 2023 vintage and following approval by the Institut National de l'Origine et de la Qualité in spring 2023, the estate began producing red wines under this same appellation. These red wines will be released from 2025, adhering to a minimum planting density of 4,500 vines per hectare, a minimum ageing period of 21 months, and a mandatory blend of at least two grape varieties.

Tastings and tours are available at the property from Monday to Saturday by appointment. The wine tourism experience includes a tour of the grounds and cellars, an overview of the estate's history, and a tasting of three vintages of the Grande Cuvée.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Vermont covers an area of 60 hectares. It is characterised by clay-limestone soils. The plots are located within the Entre-deux-Mers region.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers several cuvées. Among them is Château Vermont, a still white wine crafted primarily from Sauvignon Blanc (70%), complemented by Sémillon (20%) and Sauvignon Gris (10%). This wine typically reveals aromas of lemon, grapefruit, white flowers, and mineral notes. It is best served between 10 and 12°C and can be cellared for 1 to 5 years.

Another flagship cuvée is Château Vermont Grande Cuvée, also in AOC Entre-deux-Mers. The estate also produces a red wine named "L'Âme".

The red wine range includes bottlings such as Château Vermont, sometimes barrel-aged, and a 100% Merlot cuvée.

Vinification and ageing

White wines are generally aged in stainless steel vats. For the red wines, barrel ageing is sometimes used, with a minimum ageing requirement of 21 months for the new red wines of the Entre-deux-Mers appellation.
