Domaine de Valmengaux is located in the commune of Vérac. It is currently owned by Valérie and David Vallet.

History and philosophy

Domaine de Valmengaux was created in 2000 by Béatrice and Vincent Rapin. In 2016, the estate was taken over by Valérie and David Vallet. From the very beginning, organic farming practices were implemented, leading to organic certification in 2012.

Appellations

The estate produces wines under the Bordeaux appellation. The parcels are located in the commune of Vérac.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard covers 4 hectares and is characterised by clay-limestone soils. The vines, ranging from 30 to 70 years of age, are primarily planted with Merlot (90%) and Cabernet (10%). Plantings of Malbec and Chenin have also been introduced.

Flagship cuvées

The estate produces its main cuvée, "Valmengaux", as well as a specialised cuvée called "Valmengaux – En Jarre". The wines are distinguished by their organic character.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification takes place in concrete vats, with fermentations driven by indigenous yeasts. Ageing lasts from 12 to 24 months. For the main cuvée, ageing is carried out in 12- and 20-hectolitre Stockinger foudres for 24 months. The "En Jarre" cuvée is aged for 12 months in 500- and 950-litre Italian terracotta jars and remains unfiltered. The cellar's temperature and humidity are regulated by a Canadian well.
