Château Castagnac

Identity

Château Castagnac is a winegrowing estate located in Villegouge, managed by the Coudert family. Bernard Coudert oversees technical operations and winemaking, while Lydia Coudert handles sales, marketing, and administration.

History and Philosophy

The history of Vignobles Coudert dates back to 1865, when the first vines were planted in Vérac, at a place known as Mauvezin, by Jean Baudou and his father-in-law. The Coudert family represents the fifth generation of winegrowers. Château Castagnac itself was founded by Paul Coudert and Denise Baudou.

Bernard Coudert took the helm of the estate in 1970, with Lydia Coudert joining him in 2017. An environmental approach was introduced in 2018, and the property joined the Bordeaux Vignerons association in 2020. The estate has been certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) since 2019.

The Appellations

Château Castagnac crafts wines under the Fronsac, Bordeaux Supérieur, and Bordeaux appellations. Château Coudert-Mauvezin produces wines under the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation.

Winemaking and Ageing

Winemaking at Château Castagnac relies on indigenous yeasts and a low-sulphite approach for selected cuvées. For the zero-added-sulphite bottlings, total sulphites remain below 10 mg/L. Ageing for the wines built for cellaring takes place in French oak barrels for 12 months. At Château Coudert-Mauvezin, vinification also uses indigenous yeasts and minimal sulphites, followed by ageing in stainless steel and concrete vats and a light filtration.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The Château Castagnac vineyard spans 38 hectares, within a total of 60 hectares for Vignobles Coudert. The soils are clay-limestone. The grape varieties planted at Château Castagnac are Merlot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines have an average age of 30 years. The estate ploughs most of its soils and has used mating disruption to protect the vines against the grapevine moth since 2020. Furthermore, 30% of the land is preserved as meadows and woodlands.

Château Coudert-Mauvezin, located in Vérac, cultivates 10 hectares of Merlot Noir.

Flagship Cuvées

The estate offers a diverse range of wines, including still red wines, Bordeaux Supérieur Prestige, and a Rosé de Castagnac. Its zero-added-sulphite range includes Cuvée Raphaël, a single-varietal 100% Merlot, and Cuvée Margot, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The zero-sulphite Barrique Rebelle cuvée is also among the estate's offerings.
