Domaine Maison Blanche
Updated on
Domaine Maison Blanche, in Montagne, is certified biodynamic. The Despagne family farms 32 ha of Merlot and Cabernet Franc to craft natural wines aged in oak barrels, under the Montagne-Saint-Émilion and Crémant de Bordeaux AOCs.

Identity
Domaine Maison Blanche, also known as Château Maison Blanche, is situated in the commune of Montagne, in the Gironde. It is currently owned by the Despagne family, with Nicolas Despagne managing the estate. Patrick Richard serves as cellar master and Jean-Philippe Turtaut as vineyard manager.
History and philosophy
The history of Domaine Maison Blanche dates back to 1835, when it was founded by Bernard Constant. The estate was acquired in 1938 by Louis Rapin, before being passed down in 1972 to Françoise Rapin and Gérard Despagne. The property has been farmed by the same family for several generations, with at least eleven generations having shaped its legacy.
Since 2006, the vineyard has ceased using synthetic chemicals entirely. The commitment to organic farming began in 2006, achieving organic certification in 2009. The conversion to biodynamics began in 2011, culminating in Demeter certification in 2013. The estate is also certified by Bio Cohérence and Renaissance, and has relied on biodynamic preparations since 2001.
Appellations
The estate primarily produces wines under the Montagne-Saint-Émilion Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. Crémant de Bordeaux wines are also crafted here.

The vineyard (terroir)
The Maison Blanche vineyard covers an active area of 32 hectares in a single contiguous block, located south-west of Montagne. Out of a total surface area of 40 hectares, 8 hectares are dedicated to biodiversity. The soils consist of sandy clay and clay-limestone. Yields range between 25 and 45 hl/ha.
The grape varieties planted are Merlot (40%) and Cabernet Franc (60%). The oldest vines were planted between 1943 and 1964. Viticulture is certified organic and biodynamic. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with the grapes gathered in small crates.
Flagship cuvées
Domaine Maison Blanche crafts organic and biodynamic red wines, with select cuvées produced without added sulphites. These wines are designed to express their terroir, defined by a style that highlights pure, natural fruit and complexity. The estate's philosophy aims to create authentic, living, unadulterated wines, respecting the integrity of the grapes and the winemaking process throughout.
Vinification and ageing
Vinification at Domaine Maison Blanche is purely natural, relying on indigenous yeasts and bacteria. Ageing methods are strictly traditional, without temperature control (air conditioning) or flavour-enhancing manipulations. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for a minimum of 18 months, extending to 24 months and beyond. Bottling takes place without fining, filtration, pasteurisation, or sterilisation, preserving the raw and vibrant character of the wines.
