Identity

Château Cassagne Haut-Canon is a winegrowing estate located in Saint-Michel-de-Fronsac, in the Gironde. It is owned by the Dubois family, with Jean-Jacques Dubois as oenologist and winegrower-producer, alongside his wife Zita.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Cassagne Haut-Canon has been linked to the Dubois family since 1956, when Charles Dubois, Jean-Jacques' father, acquired the property. Jean-Jacques Dubois took over the management of the estate in 1983. Historically, the property also served as a hunting lodge for Maréchal Louis-François Armand du Plessis, Duc de Richelieu.

The estate is committed to environmentally friendly practices, adopting a sustainable approach to viticulture and encouraging biodiversity. This philosophy is reflected in an Environmental Management System (EMS) leading to ISO 14001 certification.

Appellations

Château Cassagne Haut-Canon produces wines under the Canon-Fronsac and Fronsac appellations.

The estate offers tours and tastings by appointment. Wine workshops and tasting discoveries are also organised. Zita, Jean-Jacques Dubois' wife, welcomes visitors in English, Spanish and Hungarian.

The cellar door is open daily from June to October. The estate features a terrace, Le Panorama, open from June to September every evening from 6 pm to 11 pm, and in May and October on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Château Cassagne Haut-Canon also hosts various events, such as Jazz or Bossa Nova evenings, Yoga in the park, and offers private hire of the venue for corporate or private events (weddings, christenings, birthdays). Dedicated facilities are available for motorhomes, including evening stays at the château.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Cassagne Haut-Canon vineyard covers 15 hectares, with a planted area of 13 hectares dedicated to red grape varieties. The vines, with an average age of 35 to 45 years, are situated on one of the highest points in Fronsac, benefiting from favourable hillside exposure. The estate consists of a single-block vineyard.

The terroir is characterised by Fronsadais molasse and a limestone plateau. A distinctive feature of the site is the presence of truffle oaks on the limestone plateau, bearing witness to the estate's rich biodiversity. The planting density is 6,000 vines/ha.

The vineyard's grape variety mix is dominated by Merlot (70%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (20%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%).

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers several cuvées, including “Cassagne Tradition”, “La Truffière”, “L’Orchidée Sauvage” and “Rose Lune”.

The “Cassagne Tradition” cuvée represents the estate's classic expression.

The “La Truffière” cuvée is crafted from Cabernets, particularly Cabernet Franc, which brings freshness, aromatic power and complexity on the finish to complement the Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon thrives on the rocky soils surrounding the truffle orchard. Wines from this cuvée are renowned for their ageing potential.

“L’Orchidée Sauvage” and “Rose Lune” complete the range of wines produced by Château Cassagne Haut-Canon.

Vinification and ageing

Château Cassagne Haut-Canon implements precise winemaking techniques. These include plot-by-plot selection, hand harvesting and long, temperature-controlled macerations. Each vat benefits from tailored vinification, followed by meticulous blending. The wines are aged in vats and barrels.
