Identity

Château Mazeris Bellevue is located in Saint-Michel-de-Fronsac in the Gironde. It is owned by Xavier and Pascale Collart Dutilleul. The winemaking team comprises Thierry Jouan and Chloé Conort.

History and philosophy

The estate was founded in 1840 by Jacques Bussier, with the construction of the château following in 1848. It remained in the Bussier family for six generations. Château Mazeris Bellevue was awarded the Grande Médaille d’Or du Ministre de l’Agriculture in 1889. The estate is also cited in the 1922 and 1929 editions of Cocks et Feret under the “Premières Côtes Fronsac” appellation.

Since July 2017, the estate has been owned by Xavier and Pascale Collart Dutilleul. Château Mazeris Bellevue is committed to sustainable, environmentally respectful viticulture. Conversion to organic farming began in 2018, culminating in certification by Ecocert in 2021. A transition towards biodynamics was initiated in the summer of 2020 with Paul Barre, incorporating herbal preparations and dynamisations across the entire vineyard.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard extends over 9 hectares, situated on slopes and a south-facing plateau. The soils consist of limestone and clay-limestone on the heights, and sandy-clay at the foot of the hillsides, notably on the slopes of Moulin à vent and Jean Roux. The average vine age ranges from 10 to 50 years.

The vineyard is planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The estate favours manual work such as harvesting, pruning and leaf-thinning, and uses neither chemical herbicides nor synthetic pesticides. Herbal preparations including garlic, nettle and horsetail are applied to strengthen the vines, and hedgerows have been replanted.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers several cuvées, including the Grand Vin du Château Mazeris Bellevue, a Cuvée spéciale, and Mazette de Mazeris Bellevue.

• The Grand Vin du Château Mazeris Bellevue is a still red wine, typically Merlot-dominant, complemented by the Cabernets. Blends often feature around 70% Merlot and 30% of the two Cabernets (Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon), crafted to offer a harmonious structure.
• The Canon-Fronsac La Part des Anges cuvée is another expression of the estate’s terroir.
• Mazette de Mazeris Bellevue is a sulphur-free cuvée aged in stainless steel vats to preserve freshness and fruit expression. The blend for this cuvée is typically 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc.

Vinification and ageing

Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand. The grapes are crushed and destemmed prior to maceration, which lasts between 10 and 21 days. Extraction is performed gently through split pump-overs. Ageing lasts from 12 to 18 months in concrete vats and oak barrels. For the Mazette de Mazeris Bellevue cuvée, ageing takes place exclusively in stainless steel vats.
