Identity

Château d'Abzac is located in the commune of Abzac, in Gironde. It has been owned by the d'Anglade family since 1796.

History and philosophy

Château d'Abzac, whose construction dates back to 1663, is a historic property. The architectural ensemble of the château and its mill is listed as a monument historique. The d'Anglade family has owned the estate for more than two centuries.

Appellations

The estate produces wines under the Bordeaux Supérieur, Bordeaux Rosé, Bordeaux Rouge AOC, and Lussac-Saint-Émilion appellations. The parcels are situated 14 km north of Libourne.

The tasting room and shop is open Tuesday to Friday, from 1.30 pm to 5.00 pm. The estate offers tastings and cellar visits. The “Historique” tour (€9) includes a tour of Château d’Abzac, listed as a Monument Historique, and a tasting of two wines, by appointment. The “Premium” tour (€10), available on Saturdays by appointment, offers an exploration of the Château and the Moulin, both listed as monuments historiques, followed by a tasting of two wines.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard spans 35 hectares. The soils are characterised by Graves de Günz, consisting of clay and a thick layer of red gravel. The vines have an average age of 25 years.

The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (90%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (7%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (3%).

Key cuvées

Red wines

Château d'Abzac produces several red cuvées. The Bordeaux Supérieur “Réserve” is aged for one year in French oak barrels, one-third of which are renewed each year. The Bordeaux Supérieur and the “Les Tours d'Abzac” cuvée, crafted from the youngest vines, are aged for two years in stainless steel tanks. Château Milonblanc is a 100% Merlot Lussac-Saint-Émilion. A Bordeaux AOP, Baron d'Abzac, is also produced, with an alcohol content of 12.5%.

Rosé wines

Château d'Abzac Bordeaux Rosé is the estate's rosé cuvée.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Bottling is carried out exclusively at the Château. For ageing, the Bordeaux Supérieur “Réserve” cuvée benefits from one year in French oak barrels. The Bordeaux Supérieur and “Les Tours d'Abzac” cuvées are aged for two years in stainless steel vats.
