The Terroir
Located in the Libournais, Lussac-Saint-Émilion is one of the satellite appellations of Saint-Émilion. Its vineyard is predominantly planted on clay-limestone soils, sometimes blended with gravel or sand over a clay subsoil. This geology imparts structure and ageing potential to the wines. The appellation benefits from a temperate oceanic climate with continental influences, fostering gradual grape ripening and the aromatic expression of the grape varieties.
The Wines
Lussac-Saint-Émilion is an appellation dedicated to red wines. The main grape varieties authorised and cultivated are Merlot, which often dominates the blends, bringing roundness and fruit forwardness, alongside Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which contribute tannic structure and aromatic complexity. The wines are distinguished by their generally deep colour, aromas of red and black fruit—sometimes with spicy notes—and a noticeable yet often supple tannic backbone after a few years of ageing.
Food Pairings
Lussac-Saint-Émilion wines pair well with a wide variety of dishes. Their structure and fruity aromas make them ideal companions for grilled or roasted red meats, such as beef or lamb. They also match beautifully with poultry in rich sauces, as well as soft and mature cheeses. Decanting may be considered for younger vintages to help release their aromas.
