Château du Domaine de l'Église is a winegrowing estate located in Pomerol. It is owned by the Castéja family through Groupe Borie-Manoux and is currently managed by Philippe Castéja. The cellar master is Christophe Dussutour, and the oenological team is advised by Denis Dubourdieu's consulting firm. The technical team is also shared with Château TrotteVieille.

History and philosophy

Domaine de l'Église is considered one of the oldest vineyards in Pomerol, with origins reportedly dating back to 1589. In 1793, the estate was sold as national property during the French Revolution. The Castéja family, represented by Émile Castéja, acquired it in 1973. Vineyard management follows a sustainable viticulture approach (*lutte raisonnée*), rooted in traditional winegrowing practices.

Appellations

The estate produces wines under the Pomerol AOC, as well as under the Bordeaux appellation.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château du Domaine de l'Église vineyard covers an area of 7 hectares. The soils consist of gravel and clay, resting on a subsoil of *crasse de fer* (iron-rich clay pan). The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot, which accounts for 95% of the planted surface, complemented by 5% Cabernet Franc. The average vine age is 40 years. Harvesting is carried out by hand.

The estate's principal cuvée is Château du Domaine de l'Église. It is a red wine whose aromatic profile is shaped by Merlot, the vineyard's majority grape variety, with Cabernet Franc providing complementary structure.

Vinification and ageing
