The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Grand-Maison covers a planted area of 6 hectares dedicated to vines, within a total property of 14 hectares. The entire vineyard lies within a 600-metre radius and peaks at an altitude of 85 metres, overlooking the Dordogne and benefiting from a favourable microclimate. The average age of the vines is 45 years, with plots planted in 1962 and Merlot dating back to 1949 on a limestone hillside, co-planted with Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Harvesting is carried out by hand.

The terroir is defined by a mosaic of micro-terroirs, including limestone, clay-limestone, and red gravel soils. More specifically, it comprises:

Les Valades: a Quaternary silt plateau, with sandy-loam soils shifting towards clay-loam subsoils.
Conilh: Oligocene Asterid limestone and carbonate-rich Eocene molasse deposits, providing well-structured, well-drained clay-loam soils.
La Libarde: Eocene carbonate molasses enriched with Asterid limestone of Oligocene origin.
Bouillet: sandy-loam soils mingled with quartz gravel (light, lean red gravel that warms up quickly).

The grape varieties planted comprise 80% Merlot, 16% Malbec (Cot), and 4% Cabernet Franc. Merlot brings charm and aromatic richness, Malbec lends power and complexity, and Cabernet Franc delivers finesse and freshness.

Flagship cuvées

CHÂTEAU GRAND-MAISON: A red wine from the Côtes de Bourg appellation. The blends vary depending on the vintage; for example, one vintage was crafted from 89% Merlot, 6% Malbec, and 5% Cabernet Franc. Another vintage featured 84% Merlot, 14% Malbec, and a touch of Cabernet Franc, while another contained nearly 20% Malbec. Ageing for this cuvée can take place in oak barrels, up to 50% new in certain vintages.
Cuvée Spéciale: Also a red wine from the Côtes de Bourg appellation. One vintage was blended with 11% Malbec grown on sandy-clay soils. Ageing can be carried out half in vats and half in oak barrels.
Cuvée Sélection: A red wine from the Côtes de Bourg appellation. Certain vintages have featured a blend including 14% or 18% Malbec. The wine originates from south-facing clay-limestone hillsides and benefits from twelve months of barrel ageing.
Le Trait d'Union: This cuvée is a red wine from the Côtes de Bourg appellation. The grapes are sourced from the Les Valades plot, mainly on north-facing plateau parcels. In 2020, the blend was 100% Merlot, and for other vintages, Merlot represents over 95%. Ageing takes place exclusively in vats.
