Château Labadie

Overview

Château Labadie is a winegrowing estate rooted in Mombrier, in the Gironde department. It is owned by the Dupuy family, with oenologist Eric Delacroix contributing his expertise.

History and Philosophy

The Dupuy family’s winegrowing history dates back to 1772, with ancestral winegrowers established in Noliquet, in the commune of Lansac. The current estate took shape in 1956 through the marriage of Gilbert Dupuy and Huguette Gautrat, uniting family vineyards in Tauriac and Mombrier. At that time, the estate covered around 8 hectares.

In 1973, the estate expanded to roughly 20 hectares and began bottling its own production, marking the founding of Château Labadie, situated in the lieu-dit of Labadie in Tauriac.

Joël Dupuy joined the estate in 1980 and took the helm in 1998. In 2002, a new cellar was built in Cagna, Mombrier, and SCEA Vignobles Joël Dupuy was established. By then, the estate spanned 66 hectares. Damien Dupuy, representing the ninth generation of winegrowers, joined the family business in 2010.

Since 2018, Château Labadie has pursued a proactive environmental approach, notably eliminating chemical weedkillers across its vineyard. The estate achieved Level 3 Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification in 2019.

Appellations

Château Labadie produces wines under the Côtes de Bourg appellation. Another cuvée, Château Moulin des Richards, is produced under the Bordeaux appellation.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The Château Labadie vineyard covers 16 hectares within an overall 60-hectare property. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone and gravel. The plots benefit from diverse exposures, notably on plateaus and east/west-facing hillsides.

Harvesting is carried out mechanically, followed by thorough sorting. Vine disease monitoring is optimised through predictive modelling software for downy and powdery mildew.

Château Labadie's grape variety breakdown, for the 2020 vintage for instance, is dominated by Merlot (95%) complemented by Cabernet Franc (5%). The estate also produces a cuvée called Cuvée Gabin, crafted from 100% Malbec.

Flagship Cuvées

Château Labadie

This red wine is crafted predominantly from Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc. It is characterised by oak barrel ageing and offers an ageing potential of 6 to 12 years, or even longer.

Cuvée Gabin

Introduced in 2020, this cuvée is a single-varietal red wine made from 100% Malbec. It is produced in limited quantities.

Château Laroche Joubert

This wine is another expression from Vignobles Dupuy.

Château Moulin des Richards

This is a still red wine produced under the Bordeaux appellation.

Vinification and Ageing

Winemaking practices at Château Labadie focus on preserving the fruit. They include temperature-controlled vats and macerations of around three weeks with gentle extraction of aromatic and tannic compounds. Ageing for Château Labadie takes place on fine lees for 12 months in barrels, one-third of which are new French and American oak.
