History and philosophy

The history of Château Grand Ormeau is closely linked to the Beton family. Jean-Claude Beton, an agronomist, industrialist, and founder of the Orangina group, acquired the property in 1987. His daughter, Françoise Beton, took over the helm in January 2008.

Château Grand Ormeau was mentioned as early as 1874 in the Féret guide among the "crus bourgeois et premiers artisans" of the time. The estate benefits from the consulting expertise of Michel Rolland.

The vineyard is committed to environmentally friendly practices, as demonstrated by its Level 3 HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification awarded in 2018.

Winemaking and ageing

The wines of Château Grand Ormeau undergo partial ageing in oak barrels. The duration of ageing varies across cuvées, typically lasting around one year for the grand vin and sixteen months for Cuvée Madeleine. This process is designed to preserve the typicity and authenticity of the terroir.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Grand Ormeau spans approximately 14 hectares, with 13.3 hectares planted with red grape varieties. The grape varieties are predominantly Merlot (around 70 to 80% depending on the vintage), complemented by Cabernet Franc (around 10 to 20%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (around 10%). The average vine age is approximately 40 years, with a planting density of 6,600 vines per hectare.

The estate's soils are diverse, featuring clay-gravel parcels in Néac and deep gravel in Lalande-de-Pomerol. The vineyard enjoys predominantly south-facing exposure.

Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, with no purchased grapes used.

Château Grand Ormeau

This primary cuvée is crafted from a blend dominated by Merlot, with varying proportions of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is typically structured, offering fruit-forward aromas and subtle complexity derived from its ageing.

Cuvée Madeleine

Cuvée Madeleine is produced from a selection of old vines covering around 3 hectares of the vineyard. The blend for this cuvée is heavily dominated by Merlot (around 85 to 95%). This composition lends the wine a rich aromatic expression and a distinctive texture, developed through sixteen months of oak barrel ageing.
