Château Haut Bourcier

Identity

Château Haut Bourcier is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Saint-Androny, in the Gironde department. It is owned by the Bourcier family, with Anne-Marie and Philippe Bourcier at the helm. Philippe Bourcier also acts as the estate's winemaker, while Anne-Marie Bourcier oversees the accounts. Laurent and Thomas Bourcier manage vineyard work, Caroline Bourcier handles marketing and sales, and Yannick Bourcier is in charge of invoicing.

History and philosophy

The Bourcier family's history in the vineyards dates back to 1974, when family management was first established. In 1999, Château Haut Bourcier was founded, marking the beginning of on-site winemaking. That same year, substantial investments were made to restructure the vineyard and build a new cellar. The estate is committed to environmentally friendly practices with Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification.

The appellations

Château Haut Bourcier produces wines under the Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. The estate also crafts a cuvée under the Bordeaux appellation.

Cellar-door sales, tours, and tastings are available. Bed-and-breakfast accommodation, named La Maison de Jean (5 rooms in total, featuring a covered heated swimming pool), as well as a holiday cottage (gîte), are on offer. The vineyard (terroir)

Château Haut Bourcier's vineyard covers an area of 30 hectares. The plots are situated on hillsides, where the terroir consists mainly of clay-limestone soils. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (around 80%), complemented by Cabernet-Sauvignon (around 10%), Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The estate carries out canopy management, including leaf thinning, and experiments with new grape varieties.

Signature cuvées

The estate produces several cuvées. "Château Haut Bourcier" is a still red wine, as is "Château Haut Bourcier Élevé en fût de chêne", which includes vintages such as 2006, 2008, 2014, and 2019. A special cuvée, "Château Haut Bourcier Cuvée Camille", was produced in 2015, and a "Château Haut Bourcier Cuvée spéciale Élevé en fût de chêne" in 2002. The estate also crafts a dry white wine, "100% Sauvignon Blanc", under the Bordeaux appellation.

Vinification and ageing

The wines of Château Haut Bourcier are aged in vats and barrels. For the 2019 vintage of the "Élevé en fût de chêne" cuvée, barrel ageing lasted 12 months.
