Château Haut-Canteloup

Identity

Château Haut-Canteloup is a winegrowing estate located in Gironde, managed by Alexandre and Vincent Bordenave. The property is based in the commune of Fours as well as in Saint-Christoly-Médoc.

History and philosophy

Grape growing by the Bordenave family dates back to the 19th century. The name Château Haut-Canteloup was established in 1972, which also marked the start of direct sales by the grandparents. In 2003, their parents, Catherine and Sylvain Bordenave, joined the estate. An additional vineyard parcel located in the commune of Saint-Palais-de-Blaye was incorporated into the property. The estate has been certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) since 2020.

Appellations

Château Haut-Canteloup produces wines under several appellations, notably Médoc, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux, Bordeaux Rosé, and Crémant de Bordeaux. The estate has been recognised as a Cru Bourgeois since 1932.

Château Haut-Canteloup is located at Le Château Haut Canteloup, 33340 Fours. Telephone: 05 56 41 58 98. The tasting cellar is open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm (closed on public holidays). Tours and tastings at the estate are available by appointment. The property is equipped to welcome groups, families, and motorhomes, and offers disabled access. English is spoken on-site.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Haut-Canteloup vineyard covers approximately 51 hectares. The soils are clay-limestone on the hillsides of Fours, and sandy-gravelly on the hillsides of Saint-Palais. The grape varieties grown are predominantly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.

Key cuvées

The estate offers several cuvées. The Tradition cuvée is a red wine crafted in keeping with the estate's customary methods. The L'Essentiel cuvée is a 100% Merlot red wine. The Château Les Pierrères cuvée is an oak-aged red wine made from a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc, grown on clay-limestone soil with a stony subsoil. The Prestige cuvée is also an oak-aged red wine.
