The Vineyard (Terroir)
The Château Haut-Chaigneau vineyard covers approximately 30 hectares, 21 of which are planted with red grape varieties. The average age of the vines is 35 years. The soils consist of clay, siliceous deposits (sands, gravels) and silt. The primary grape varieties planted are Merlot (75%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (25%).
Flagship Cuvées
The estate's main cuvée, Château Haut-Chaigneau, under the Lalande de Pomerol appellation, is crafted from a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. It displays a dense purple colour with garnet highlights. The nose reveals intense aromas of red berries, blackberry, vanilla, toasted oak, liquorice, smoke, tobacco and black truffle. On the palate, it proves powerful and velvety, with lingering persistence.
The estate also offers “Le Claret du Haut-Chaigneau”, a rosé wine under the Vin de France appellation, made with 25% Cabernet Franc.
Vinification and Ageing
Harvesting at Château Haut-Chaigneau is carried out both by hand and mechanically. The grapes are fully destemmed and passed over sorting tables. A cold pre-fermentation maceration is carried out, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Malolactic fermentation is completed. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels. A light filtration is performed before bottling with traditional natural corks.
