Château Haut-Piquat is an estate located in Lussac, in Gironde. It is owned by the Famille Rivière. Eric Sabaca is the vineyard manager.

History and Philosophy

The estate's origins date back more than 300 years. The property was acquired in 1972 by the Famille Rivière. Château Haut-Piquat features an elegant 19th-century residence. Committed to environmental stewardship, the estate is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) Level 3. It also holds the Vignobles et Découvertes label.

The Appellations

The parcels of Château Haut-Piquat produce wines under the Lussac Saint-Émilion appellation. The estate also operates across other appellations such as Lalande de Pomerol, Montagne Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion.

Visits and tastings are available by appointment and are free of charge. The estate welcomes groups (from 10 to 150 people) and is pet-friendly. Ample parking is available for cars, alongside a helipad. The property offers Wi-Fi and accepts various payment methods (credit cards, bank cheques, holiday vouchers, cash). The château’s grounds can be hired for private events.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The vineyard covers an area of 22 hectares. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone to the south and clay-loam to the north. The terroir is characterised by limestone plateaux and slopes covered with red sandy-clay deposits. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Viticultural practices include leaf stripping and green harvesting, as part of a sustainable farming approach.

Flagship Cuvées

Château Haut-Piquat produces several cuvées, the principal one bearing the estate's name, Château Haut-Piquat. This red wine, crafted predominantly from Merlot (around 80%), is complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. It is distinguished by an assertive character, an intense colour, a delicate bouquet with red fruit notes, and a fine balance between power, roundness and finesse. The estate also offers the cuvée “La Fleur de Château Haut-Piquat” as well as Château de Beaulieu. A wide selection of back vintages is available at the property.

Vinification and Ageing

The harvest undergoes double manual sorting. Vinification focuses on gentle extraction of tannins. The wines are aged in both vats and barrels, with one third of the oak barrels renewed each year.
