Identity

Château Hostin le Roc is a family-owned winegrowing estate located across the communes of Saint-Quentin-de-Baron and Nérigean, in the Gironde. It is owned by the Boutinon family, and specifically managed since 2015 by Catherine and Jérôme Boutinon.

History and philosophy

Originally from the Périgord, the Boutinon family settled in the region, in Nérigean, during the 1910s. The estate as it stands today was founded in 1972 by André and Renée Boutinon, with a first vintage produced that very same year. However, the site's winegrowing heritage at the lieu-dit Hostin dates back to the mid-18th century, with records dating to 1749. In 2015, Catherine and Jérôme Boutinon took over the helm of the estate. Since 2019, the property has been committed to organic conversion.

The appellations

Château Hostin le Roc produces wines across several appellations: the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation for dry white wines, the Bordeaux Rosé appellation for rosés, and the Bordeaux Rouge appellation for red wines.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Hostin le Roc spans 30 hectares, predominantly with south and south-east exposures. The soils are clay-limestone, resting on an asteriated limestone bedrock. The average age of the vines is 27 years. The grape varieties planted consist primarily of Merlot Noir (85%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), and a blend of Sauvignon and Sauvignon Gris (5%).

Among the estate's standout plots is “La Pièce N°941”, located in the lieu-dit Hostin. This parcel features clay-silt soils ranging from 30 to 70 cm in depth over a limestone subsoil. Its elevation varies between 48 and 63 metres, with a south-eastern exposure. Some of the Malbec and Merlot Noir vines in this plot were planted in 1890.

Flagship cuvées

The estate offers a range of wines comprising whites, rosés, and reds. The Entre-Deux-Mers, crafted entirely from Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris, is distinguished by its vibrant fruit and aromatic expression, aged on its lees to enhance roundness.

The Bordeaux Rosé, made from a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon (from old vines) and 50% Merlot, is characterized as a crisp, fruity, and rounded wine with genuine character. The red wines of the Bordeaux Rouge appellation are crafted in a style balancing freshness, complexity, and finesse, offering fine ageing potential.

Among the various cuvées produced are the “Cuvée Rosé H”, “Cuvée La Pièce N°941”, “Cuvée 50”, “Grande Cuvée Rouge”, “Grande Cuvée Blanc”, “Cuvée L'Orangerie”, “Cuvée Entre-deux-Mers”, “Cuvée Rouge H”, and “Cuvée Rouge Frais H”.

Vinification and ageing

The Bordeaux Rouge is aged for 12 months in oak barrels. The Entre-Deux-Mers undergoes a few days of ageing on the lees to build texture and roundness.
