Identity

Château Lamothe-Bergeron is located in Cussac-Fort-Médoc, in Gironde. It has been owned by CAPSSA since late 2019. Charles Lemoine has been its director since 2020, and the estate benefits from the expertise of consultant oenologist Hubert de Boüard.

History and philosophy

The first historical mention of Château Lamothe-Bergeron dates back to the 14th century. The current château was built in 1868. The estate was acquired in 2009 and again in late 2019 by CAPSSA (Caisse de prévoyance des agents de la sécurité sociale et assimilés). It earned Cru Bourgeois Supérieur status in 2003 and is now aiming for the Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel classification. Château Lamothe-Bergeron is committed to sustainable practices, as shown by its Terra Vitis and level 3 HVE environmental certifications, as well as its Cultivons Demain CSR label. The estate aims to achieve organic certification.

Appellations

Château Lamothe-Bergeron produces wines under the Haut-Médoc and Bordeaux appellations. It is recognised as a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur.

Practical information

Château Lamothe-Bergeron is located at 49, chemin des Graves, 33460 Cussac-Fort-Médoc. Visits are by appointment only. The shop is open throughout the day. From November to March, opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and from April to October, 7 days a week from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The estate offers paying tours and tastings. Groups are welcome, from 5 to 50 people. Wi-Fi is available on-site and pets are welcome. Accepted payment methods include American Express, payment cards, cheques, and cash.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Lamothe-Bergeron spans a total area of 67 hectares. The soil consists of Garonne gravel. The average age of the vines is 30 years, with a planting density of 7,500 vines per hectare. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot (52%), Cabernet Sauvignon (46%), and Petit Verdot (2%). An area of 11 hectares has been replanted, alongside a project to plant an additional 2 hectares with white grape varieties.

Flagship cuvées

The main cuvée, Château Lamothe-Bergeron, is a red wine noted for its power and elegance. The second wine, Demoiselles de Bergeron, is praised for its finesse, freshness, and immediate appeal. The estate also offers the Château Romefort cuvée, an ambitious and generous wine, as well as the Haut-Médoc cuvée Villa Romefort Les sables noirs and the Bordeaux Cuvée Maxence.

Vinification and ageing

Winemaking techniques include cold pre-fermentation maceration and malolactic fermentation in barrels. The estate carries out plot-by-plot vinification in stainless steel vats. The wines are aged in oak barrels for 12 months, with approximately 30% new barrels.
