Château Monbousquet

Identity

Château Monbousquet is a winegrowing estate located in the commune of Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens. Owned by Gérard Perse, it forms part of Vignobles Perse. Laurent Lusseau manages the estate, with Michel Rolland serving as consulting oenologist and Jean-Philippe Lavautour as cellar master. The Perse family, including Chantal Perse, Angélique Perse and Henrique Da Costa, is also actively involved in running the estate.

History and philosophy

Gérard Perse acquired Château Monbousquet in 1993, ushering in a period of transformation for the property. The first vintage of red Château Monbousquet under this new ownership was released that same year. In 1994, production of Monbousquet blanc was launched. The estate has refined its vinification over time, particularly for the white wine, with better-controlled ageing and a less oak-dominated style from 2005 onwards. The vineyard's terroir has also seen notable improvements, especially for the reds.

Appellations

The parcels of Château Monbousquet lie south of Saint-Émilion and east of Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens. The estate produces wines under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation and holds the Grand Cru Classé ranking. A white cuvée is also crafted under the Bordeaux appellation.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Monbousquet vineyard covers 32 to 33 hectares, with vines averaging 42 years of age. The estate's soils feature sandy-silty boulbènes, sandy-gravelly, clay-gravelly, and sandy-gravel formations. The grape varieties planted for the red wines comprise 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The terroir dedicated to the white wines is also situated in Saint-Émilion.

Flagship cuvées

Château Monbousquet offers several cuvées. The main red cuvée is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. The estate also produces a second red wine, Angélique de Monbousquet, which is likewise a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. In terms of white wines, Château Monbousquet Blanc is a blend of 66% Sauvignon blanc and 34% Sauvignon gris, marketed under the Bordeaux appellation.

Vinification and ageing

Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand. The red wines are aged in oak barrels, with 70% new oak and 30% barrels of one or more previous wines. Barrel ageing can last up to 24 months for certain vintages. Monbousquet blanc has evolved towards a more delicately integrated oak profile, lending it greater purity, freshness, vitality and minerality.
