Identity

Château Pey de Pont is a winegrowing estate located in Civrac-en-Médoc, in the Gironde department. The property is currently managed by Henri Reich.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Pey de Pont dates back to the 19th century, with records of the estate appearing as early as 1850. It was listed in the very first edition of the reference work “Bordeaux et ses Vins”. In 1874, production reached 90 tonneaux.

The current family acquired the estate in 1950 when Jean Reich took ownership. At that time, the vineyard covered 12 hectares, and production was delivered to a cooperative winery. Henri Reich, his grandson, subsequently continued the expansion of the vineyard.

In 1997, Château Pey de Pont left the cooperative to vinify its entire production at the estate, under the leadership of Laurent and Olivier Reich. This year marked the estate's first château bottling. The estate has also been recognised as a Cru Bourgeois since 1932.

Appellations

The wines of Château Pey de Pont are produced under the Médoc appellation. The estate also holds the Cru Bourgeois classification.

Practical information

Château Pey de Pont is located at 3-5 route Port de Goulée, 33340 Civrac-en-Médoc. The estate is open to the public from Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

Winery tours with guided tastings are available by appointment and last approximately one hour. These visits include a tour of the vat room and a presentation of vinification methods, followed by a Q&A session and a tasting of selected vintages. The estate can accommodate groups of up to 50 people. Cellar-door sales and mail orders are available. On-site tastings can also be arranged.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Pey de Pont vineyard covers 36 hectares. It is characterised by two primary terroir types, comprising clay-limestone soils and sandy-gravel soils. The parcels are located across the communes of Bégadan and Civrac. The estate maintains complete autonomy from vine to bottle, purchasing no outside grapes.

Flagship cuvées

The estate's principal cuvée is Château Pey de Pont. It is a red wine crafted from a blend of grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with proportions varying according to the vintage. For example, the 2022 blend consists of 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Petit Verdot, 28% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. These wines are crafted to express the distinctive character of the Médoc terroir and offer an ageing potential of up to 10 years.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification has been carried out entirely at the château since 1997. Ageing, as documented for the 2016 vintage, takes place in both vats and oak barrels, lending complexity and structure to the wine.
