Identity

Château Segonzac is a winegrowing estate located in Saint-Genès-de-Blaye, in the Gironde. The property is managed by Charlotte and Thomas Herter. Guillaume de La Quintinie is the estate manager, and Caroline is in charge of hospitality and administration.

History and Philosophy

Château Segonzac was founded in 1887 by Jean Dupuy. The estate earned the distinction of 1er Cru Bourgeois a few years after its creation. In 1990, the property was acquired by Jacques Marmet. Charlotte and Thomas Herter have managed the estate since 2000. Château Segonzac achieved organic farming certification through Ecocert, with its first certified organic harvest in 2012.

Appellations

Château Segonzac produces wines under the Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux (37 ha), red Bordeaux Supérieur (3 ha), Bordeaux Blancs (1 ha), and Vin de pays de l'Atlantique (1 ha for Chardonnay) appellations.

Winemaking and Ageing

Certain cuvées are aged in vats, whilst others, such as Cuvée Vieilles Vignes and Héritage, benefit from barrel ageing that can last up to fourteen months.

The property offers tastings and cellar-door sales. Tours and tastings are available by appointment, hosted by Guillaume de La Quintinie or Caroline. Weekday visiting hours are Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00. Weekend visits are available by appointment, except in July and August, from 10:00 to 18:00.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The Château Segonzac vineyard covers a total area of 43 hectares, 31 hectares of which are planted with red grape varieties. The average age of the vines is 30 years, with some reaching up to 65 years. The soils are clay-limestone, characterised by a limestone bedrock several metres thick that outcrops in various places. The vineyard aspects range from south to north-west.

The grape varieties for red wines comprise:

• Merlot: 60%
• Cabernet Sauvignon: 20%
• Malbec: 10%
• Cabernet Franc: 5%
• Petit Verdot: 5%

For white wines, the cultivated grape varieties are Sauvignon, Sémillon, and Chardonnay.

Flagship Cuvées

The estate produces several cuvées, each expressing a distinctive style.

Cuvée Tradition (Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux)
This wine offers a balanced and honest expression, crafted with care. It is aged in vats. The blend is predominantly Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%).

Cuvée Les Vieilles Vignes (Premières Côtes de Blaye)
Sourced from vines over forty years old, this cuvée offers greater depth and benefits from barrel ageing, sometimes in new oak. It can be blended from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, drawn from a 3-hectare parcel selection and aged for fourteen months. Another documented blend includes 30% Malbec, revealing a spicy and floral nose with notes of violet, aniseed, and damson plum, alongside a well-structured palate with rounded tannins. This cuvée has notable ageing potential.

Cuvée Héritage (Bordeaux Supérieur)
This cuvée is crafted from parcels situated on a sunny hillside facing the Gironde, 3 km from Blaye. The blend can comprise 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, aged for fourteen months in oak barrels. Another documented blend consists of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cuvée Mon Blanc (Bordeaux blanc)
This white wine is crafted from an equal blend of Sauvignon and Sémillon.
