The vineyard (terroir)
The Château Toulifaut vineyard extends over an area of 2 hectares. It is situated on the southern slopes of the Pomerol winegrowing area. The soils are characterised by a sandy and gravelly composition, resting on a subsoil layer of iron pan (crasse de fer). The average age of the vines is between 35 and 50 years. The grape varieties are 100% Merlot.
Flagship cuvées
The main cuvée of Château Toulifaut, under the Pomerol appellation, is crafted exclusively from Merlot. Its annual production is around 11,000 bottles.
Vinification and ageing
The wines of Château Toulifaut benefit from ageing that combines both vats and oak barrels. Following fermentation and maceration, ageing takes place in oak barrels for 14 to 16 months. These casks are renewed each year with 50% new oak and 50% one-wine barrels. A final ageing phase in stainless steel vats of around 5 months takes place prior to bottling.
