Identity

Clos des Religieuses is an estate located in the commune of Puisseguin. It is currently owned by Sabine and Thierry Leynier, who also craft the wines.

History and philosophy

The history of Clos des Religieuses dates back to the 17th century. The original building was then an annex to the convent of Saint-Émilion. The estate's name, Clos des Religieuses, refers to the Order of Saint Ursula—also known as the Ursulines of Saint-Émilion—who owned the property in the 17th century. In 1952, the estate was acquired by the Leynier family. The estate holds Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification.

Wines from Clos des Religieuses are produced under several appellations, notably Puisseguin-Saint-Émilion, Montagne-Saint-Émilion, and Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Clos des Religieuses vineyard extends over approximately 10 hectares. The grape variety plantings are dominated by Merlot (90%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (10%).

Signature cuvées

The estate primarily produces red wines. The main cuvée is Clos des Religieuses, available across different appellations such as Puisseguin-Saint-Émilion, Montagne-Saint-Émilion, and Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux. The estate also offers the cuvée Ch. Saint-Pierre l'Église.

Vinification and ageing

The vinification of the red wines involves an ageing process combining vats and barrels. For the Clos des Religieuses cuvée, ageing generally takes place over 12 months in vats, followed by 8 months in oak barrels.
