Château de la Grenière is a family-run winegrowing estate located in the commune of Lussac, in the Gironde département. The property is currently managed by Jean-Pierre and Audren Dubreuil, with Audren Dubreuil serving as winemaker. The estate is owned by the Dubreuil family.

History and philosophy

The history of Château de la Grenière is steeped in time, with its main residence dating back to the 17th century. The estate has been owned by the Dubreuil family since 1914, representing five generations of family transmission. Committed to environmentally conscious practices, the property adheres to sustainable viticulture and is certified HVE 4.

Appellations

Château de la Grenière crafts wines under the Lussac-Saint-Émilion appellation. An additional cuvée is also produced under the IGP Atlantique designation.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château de la Grenière extends over 15 hectares. The soils display great diversity, including clay-gravel, clay-loam over blue clays, and sandy-clay. The vines have an overall average age of around 50 years, with some plots reaching 60 years for specific cuvées. Vineyard management practices include grass cover cropping between vine rows. The estate's main grape varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. For the Château de La Grenière cuvée, the blend consists of 34% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Franc, and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon. For the Château Haut La Grenière cuvée, the varietal mix is 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Signature cuvées

The estate offers a range of still red wines. Château de La Grenière is made from 40-year-old vines grown on clay-loam soils over blue clays, with a southern exposure. The blend is predominantly Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Château Haut La Grenière comes from approximately 35-year-old vines planted on sandy-clay soils facing south to south-west. Its blend focuses on Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Another cuvée, Cuvée de la Chartreuse, features Merlot and Cabernets sourced from vines around 45 years of age. These wines are typically characterised by an aromatic profile expressive of black fruits and spices.

Vinification and ageing

Harvesting is carried out by hand for certain cuvées and mechanically for others. Vinification takes place in concrete or stainless steel vats, as well as in oak barrels. Ageing varies across the range: Château de La Grenière is aged half in oak barrels and half in vat. Château Haut La Grenière undergoes 18 months of ageing in concrete vats. For Cuvée de la Chartreuse, ageing is partly conducted in oak barrels for 12 to 18 months, using a combination of new barrels and barrels of one or more previous wines.
