Identity

Château de Reignac is a winegrowing estate located in Saint-Loubès, in the Gironde department. It is owned by Yves and Stéphanie Vatelot. Nicolas Lesaint serves as the estate's technical director, with consulting oenologist Michel Rolland also advising the property.

History and philosophy

The main residence at Château de Reignac is a manor house built in the 16th century. The estate was taken over in 1990 by Yves and Stéphanie Vatelot. A greenhouse designed by Gustave Eiffel is also located on the property.

Appellations

Château de Reignac produces wines under the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation.

The cellar door opening hours are as follows: from October to April, Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:00. From May to September, Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 18:00.

The estate offers on-site tastings and direct sales. Tours are available by appointment. The 1.5-hour "Terres de Reignac" tour runs from June to August for 2 to 12 people. The 2-hour "Reignac et son jardin des senteurs" tour is also available by reservation from June to late August, weather permitting, for 2 to 12 people. Guest rooms (chambres d'hôtes) are available on the property.

The vineyard (terroir)

The estate spans 145 hectares, of which 75 hectares are planted with vines. The soils consist of clay-limestone and gravelly clay. The vineyard is established on terroirs that exhibit characteristics of both the Right and Left Banks.

The vineyard's grape varieties are predominantly Merlot (60%), complemented by Cabernets (35%) and Malbec (5%). For the white wines, Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, and Sémillon are grown.

Signature cuvées

The estate produces three red wines, including the Grand Vin and a prestige cuvée named Balthus, as well as one white wine. The Balthus cuvée is crafted from Merlot. Château de Reignac also produces a cuvée called "CHÂTEAU REIGNAC DE TIZAC Cuvée Anaë", made predominantly from Merlot, with an annual production of 240,000 bottles.

Château de Reignac rouge features a blend of 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernets, and 5% Malbec. The white wine of Château de Reignac is made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, and Sémillon. Single-plot and single-varietal cuvées are also featured during specific tastings, such as P’tites glaises, Roule Cailloux, and R de REIGNAC.

Vinification and ageing

For the red wines, vinification incorporates the technique of micro-oxygenation on the skins (sous marc). Ageing takes place in vats and oak barrels, lasting around twelve months in barrel for certain cuvées, including new oak. For the white wine, vinification can be carried out in new oak barrels (for 80% of the volume), concrete vats, and stoneware amphorae. Concrete egg vinification was notably used for Sauvignon Gris and Sémillon in the 2014 vintage.
