Château Sénéjac

Identity

Château Sénéjac is situated in the commune of Le Pian-Médoc. The estate is owned by the Bignon-Cordier family, represented by Philippine, Marguerite, and Gustave Bignon-Cordier. The estate manager is Pierre-Olivier Larrieu, with Éric Boissenot serving as consulting oenologist.

History and philosophy

The history of Château Sénéjac dates back to the 16th century, when the first vines were planted under the ownership of Nicolas de Bloys. In the 18th century, the estate passed into the hands of Joseph-Ignace de Chatard, before being acquired by Jean-Louis Baour in 1746. Around the mid-19th century, in 1860, the Comte de Guigné became the owner of the estate, which was producing around 100,000 bottles per year at the time.

In 1999, Lorraine Cordier acquired the property. Following her passing in 2011, the estate was taken over by her nieces Philippine and Marguerite, alongside her nephew Gustave Bignon-Cordier, supported by Nancy Bignon-Cordier and Jean-Paul Bignon. The estate is actively committed to sustainable viticulture, certified by the BeeFriendly label. Major renovations have been carried out, particularly on the château facade, led by architect Paul-Henri Quié Nayel, with the aim of creating a boutique, a cellar, a tasting room, seminar spaces, and guest rooms.

Appellations

The parcels of Château Sénéjac are located in the Médoc and produce wines under the Haut-Médoc appellation. The estate also crafts a cuvée under the Bordeaux Clairet appellation.

The vineyard (terroir)

The vineyard of Château Sénéjac covers 41 hectares within a 150-hectare estate comprising farmland, parkland, woodland, and ponds. The average vine age is 35 years. The soils consist of gravel ridges dating from the Pliocene to the west and the Guntz to the east, alongside clay and gravel. The vines are managed using traditional methods. Harvesting is carried out mechanically.

The grape varieties are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (53% to 54%), complemented by Merlot (29% to 32%), Cabernet Franc (10% to 11%), and Petit Verdot (4% to 7%).

Flagship cuvées

The estate's grand vin is Château Sénéjac, a red wine from the Haut-Médoc appellation. It is distinguished by a deep colour, expressive aromas of dark fruits and spices, and offers generous breadth on the palate with fine-grained tannins. These wines are widely appreciated for their elegance, drinkability, and approachability. They are best enjoyed within their first ten years to appreciate their full fruit and freshness, or left to age gracefully in the cellar.

The estate also produces a second wine, Le Comte de Sénéjac, as well as a Haut-Médoc cuvée named Karolus and a Bordeaux Clairet.

Vinification and ageing

The ageing of the grand vin, Château Sénéjac, lasts between 12 and 15 months, using 30% new oak.
