Château Séraphine is a winegrowing estate located in the Pomerol appellation.

History and Philosophy

Château Séraphine is a Pomerol vineyard created by American vintner Martin Krajewski, already the owner of two other Bordeaux estates. The acquisition of Château Séraphine in 2010 and its first vintage in 2017 marked a new milestone in his career. The name “Séraphine” was chosen in tribute to his mother.

The wines of Château Séraphine are produced under the Pomerol appellation.

Flagship Wines

The estate's principal cuvée is Château Séraphine. The 2017 vintage, for example, was produced entirely from Merlot. Production of this cuvée is generally limited.

Winemaking and Ageing

Winemaking practices at Château Séraphine begin with a one-day cold soak at 10°C. Alcoholic fermentation lasts 9 to 10 days at a controlled temperature between 26 and 28°C, with regular pump-overs and punch-downs, as well as a single rack-and-return (délestage). A three-week post-fermentation maceration is then carried out at 30°C.

Malolactic fermentation takes place in 300-litre French oak barrels. Ageing lasts between 12 and 14 months, mainly in 300-litre French oak barrels, with a varying proportion of new and second-fill casks. For the 2019 vintage, the breakdown was 40% new oak and 60% second- and third-fill barrels. This vintage also saw the introduction of a 1,000-litre clay amphora and two new French oak “vinification intégrale” barrels, gravity-fed directly from the sorting table.

The Vineyard (Terroir)

The Château Séraphine vineyard spans a total surface area of 2.2 hectares, comprising two main plots.

The “Plince” plot covers an area of 1 hectare. Its soils consist of a well-drained surface sand slope overlying clay and deep gravel. It was replanted with Cabernet Franc in 2017, with a planting density of 8,000 vines per hectare.

The “Mazeyres” plot represents 1.2 hectares. The soils of this parcel feature an elevated deposit of deep gravel, as well as shallow sandy soils over gravel and blue clay (smectite). It was also replanted with Merlot in 2017, with a planting density of 8,000 vines per hectare.
