Clos René

Identity

Clos René is a winegrowing estate whose family history is deeply rooted in Pomerol. Today, it is managed by Jean-Marie Garde, with Pierre Lasserre serving as estate manager. Its headquarters are located in Libourne, in the Gironde department.

History and philosophy

Clos René is a family vineyard that has been passed down from generation to generation for over a century. The estate was previously known under the name Reney. In terms of viticulture, Clos René follows a sustainable approach (lutte raisonnée) and is certified HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale).

The vineyard (terroir)

The Clos René vineyard covers an area of 15 hectares, with 15 hectares planted to red grape varieties. It is situated on the western slope of the Pomerol appellation plateau. The soils are characterised by Quaternary gravel resting on a layer of crasse de fer. The average age of the vines is 40 years. The grape varieties comprise Merlot (75%), Cabernet Franc (20%) and Malbec (5%). Harvesting is carried out by hand.

Flagship cuvées

The estate produces the main cuvée “Clos René” as well as the cuvée “Clos René Château du Couvent”. Clos René wines are generally described as Pomerol with character, often displaying notes of truffle, ripe or juicy fruit, with silky or velvety tannins. Certain vintages can show an elegant freshness, floral aromas or a mineral signature.
