Identity

Château Trotanoy is a winegrowing estate located in Libourne, in the Gironde département. Under the stewardship of Christian and Édouard Moueix, its operating owner is Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix. Laurent Descos serves as cellar master, with Éric Murisasco as consultant oenologist.

History and philosophy

Château Trotanoy traces its origins back to the 18th century, when it was initially owned by the Giraud family under the historic name of Trop Ennuie. The Moueix family acquired the property in 1953 through Jean-Pierre Moueix. It has remained within the family ever since, with Christian Moueix, assisted by his son Édouard, overseeing current management. The estate holds Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification and champions traditional viticulture, incorporating regular ploughing, crop thinning, and canopy leaf removal.

Château Trotanoy produces wines under the Pomerol appellation.

Key wines

The estate's flagship wine is Château Trotanoy. The property also produces a second wine, named Espérance de Trotanoy, introduced with the 2009 vintage. Sourced primarily from gravel parcels in the north-eastern section of the vineyard, this cuvée is crafted solely in the finest vintages, making it a very limited production.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Trotanoy vineyard covers an area of 7.2 hectares, set on parcels across the Pomerol plateau. The soils boast a distinctive mix: one half features gravel over clay, while the other half consists of deep black clay soils, all resting on a subsoil of crasse de fer (iron-rich pan). Grape varieties are dominated by Merlot, complemented by a proportion of Cabernet Franc. The average vine age is around 35 years, planted at a density of 6,200 vines per hectare. The harvest is performed entirely by hand.

Vinification and ageing

Fermentation of the wines at Château Trotanoy takes place in concrete vats. Ageing is carried out in oak barrels, with 50% of the barrels renewed every year. Average annual production is approximately 25,000 bottles.
