Frequently asked questions

Who owns Château Chadenne and since when?
Château Chadenne is owned by Philippe and Véronique Jean. They acquired the estate in 1999 and produced their first vintage under their management in 2000. They are also the winegrowers managing daily operations, supported by consulting oenologist Christian Veyry.
How large is the Château Chadenne vineyard and what are its characteristics?
The Château Chadenne vineyard covers 9 hectares. It is characterised by a clay-limestone terroir resting on a limestone subsoil. The parcels benefit from south or south-westerly exposure on a plateau overlooking the Dordogne valley. The vines have an average age of 30 to 35 years, with a planting density ranging between 5,000 and 7,000 vines per hectare.
Which grape varieties are used for Château Chadenne wines and in what proportions?
The grape varieties at Château Chadenne are dominated by Merlot, which makes up 92% of the blend, with Cabernet Sauvignon completing the remaining 8%. These varieties are used both for the red wines in the Fronsac appellation and for the rosé produced under the Bordeaux appellation.
How are Château Chadenne's red wines vinified and aged?
Harvesting for the red wines is carried out by hand in small crates, followed by sorting in the cellar and complete destemming. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and, for the main cuvée, in wooden vats as well. Maceration is extended over roughly four weeks. Ageing lasts 18 months in stave-oak barrels, with 50% new oak for both Château Chadenne Fronsac and Château La Fleur Chadenne.

The vineyard (terroir)

The Château Chadenne vineyard covers an area of 9 hectares. It is established on clay-limestone soils overlying a limestone subsoil. The parcels benefit from a south or south-westerly exposure on the plateau overlooking the Dordogne valley. The average age of the vines is between 30 and 35 years. Planting density ranges from 5,000 to 7,000 vines per hectare.

The grape varieties grown are led by Merlot as the principal variety, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon. Viticultural practices in the vineyard include double Guyot pruning, controlled grass cover, leaf thinning, and green harvesting.

Flagship cuvées

Château Chadenne produces several wines:

Château Chadenne Fronsac

This cuvée is crafted from a blend dominated by Merlot (92%), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (8%). Harvesting is carried out by hand in small crates, followed by sorting in the cellar and complete destemming. Yields range between 30 and 35 hectolitres per hectare. Ageing lasts 18 months in stave-oak barrels, with 50% new oak. Vinification takes place in wooden vats and temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with extended maceration lasting four weeks. This wine displays a structure where the expression of fruit balances harmoniously with oak ageing.

Château La Fleur Chadenne

This is the estate's second wine. The blend is similar to the principal cuvée, with 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvesting is also manual in small crates, with sorting in the cellar and complete destemming. Yields range between 30 and 35 hectolitres per hectare. The 18-month ageing is carried out in stave-oak barrels, 50% of which are new. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats with long macerations of four weeks. This cuvée offers a more approachable take on the estate's style, while retaining an elegant structure.

Le Rosé de Chadenne

This rosé is made predominantly from Merlot (92%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (8%). Harvesting is carried out by machine with optical sorting, followed by manual sorting in the cellar. The yield is 40 hectolitres per hectare. It stands out for its freshness and fruity aromatic profile.

Vinification and ageing

For the red wines, harvesting is done by hand in small crates with sorting in the cellar and 100% destemming. Fermentations take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and, for Château Chadenne, also in wooden vats, with prolonged macerations of around four weeks. Ageing takes place in stave-oak barrels for 18 months, with 50% new oak for both Château Chadenne and Château La Fleur Chadenne.

For Le Rosé de Chadenne, the harvest is carried out by machine, supplemented by optical and manual sorting in the cellar.
